A Belated Happy Birthday to the Library of Congress

Apr 25, 2024

The Library of Congress’ Thomas Jefferson Building, built in 1897. The original LOC was housed at the U.S. Capitol Building.

The Library of Congress celebrated its 224th birthday yesterday!

Founded in 1800, the LOC is the United States’ oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the library and research service of the U.S. Congress. It is the largest library in the United States, as well as the second largest library in the world.

The Library of Congress’ main lobby is full of breathtaking art and architecture.

Several of our Wyoming library professionals had the opportunity to visit this beautiful library in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. It is a truly magnificent structure and worth a visit if you are ever in the D.C. area.

The Library of Congress’ main reading room is viewable to the public from glass windows on the mezzanine, but is only accessible to those sixteen and older who hold a LOC-issued Reader Identification Card.
