Washington’s reception by the ladies, on passing the bridge at Trenton, N.J. April 1789, on his way to New York to be inaugurated first president of the United States Image from the Library of Congress.

Inauguration Day is Friday, January 20, 2017 and it’s not just a day when the newly elected president and vice president are sworn into office. Starting with a morning worship service and ending with the inaugural ball, it is an event filled day rich with tradition, some of it dating back to George Washington’s first inauguration in 1789.
