Within our GoWYLD.net resources, you have access to a very comprehensive resource for the study of animals.
Find Grzimek’s under Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL), also called Gale e-books. Scroll to Environment or Science and arrow to Grzimek’s Animal Life Encyclopedia and Grzimek’s Student Animal Life Resource.
You can choose a volume (ex. insects, fishes, mammals) or use the Search Within Publication (on the right) to locate a specific animal or Family (by common name or scientific name). You can also view the entire e-book (see the link under the cover image).
Each entry includes sections on physical characteristics, geographic range, habitat; diet, behavior and reproduction, animals and people, and conservation status. All entries are followed by one or more species accounts with the same information as well as a range map and photo or illustration for each species. Entries conclude with a list of books, periodicals, and websites that may be used for further research.
Included in the Student Animal Life Resource is a pronunciation guide to scientific names and a Words to Know section.
Maybe you want to add these to your Christmas bird count or your holiday “just for fun” research: check out Christmas Island frigatebirds, mistletoebirds, Santa Marta brush tyrants (ok, not so festive!), or peppermint stick insects. All are found in the Animal Life Encyclopedia. To locate these species of birds (and the peppermint stick insect), use Search Within Publication. Within each creature’s results page, scroll and look for the highlighted search terms, or do a CTRL-F.
As with other Gale resources, you can use the highlights and notes feature, get the source citation and export to Google Drive, OneDrive, NoodleTools or EasyBib.
