DeMarge Tolliver

February is National Black History Month!  The Wyoming State Library has a variety of resources to help you celebrate.

A wealth of information about Black pioneers, cowboys, military service, civil rights, prominent historical figures, and community organizations can be found in GoWYLD’s “African-American History in Wyoming” LibGuide.

For example, patrons can read about DeMarge Tolliver who was the first Black child on record to have been born in Wyoming Territory.  Or, find out more about Empire, Wyoming, an all-Black community that was located 10 miles northeast of Torrington, Wyoming.  A blbliography of additional reading materials is also available in the LibGuide to help librarians and patrons find even more information resources.

GoWYLD’s history databases are another great place to find information about historical events in Black history, as well as biographical information on important Black historical figures.

For younger readers, BookFlix offers several paired text sets about Black history, including books about the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and more.

Be sure to check out the GoWYLD‘s many resources to expand your knowledge of history!
