Get Ready for Pi Day!

Mar 12, 2025

Are you ready for some pi?

No, not PIE. Pi!

Pi Day is coming up on Friday, March 14, and it’s the perfect opportunity for math to take center stage!

Pi or π is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. In recent years, March 14 (3/14) has been a day to celebrate math in schools, libraries, and anywhere else since the value of this irrational number is 3.14 (with an infinite number of nonrepeating digits following the .14). For instance, in March of 2024, the Carbon County Library System held a pi digit memorization contest for patrons, which was won by an eight-year-old student who correctly recited the first 163 digits of pi.

If you are looking for some informative resources to help you celebrate Pi Day at your library or school, check out GoWYLD. A fun mathematical adventure, Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi by Cindy Neuschwander, is available on Tumblebook Library. Information about pi can be found for students Pre-kindergarten through high school using Brittanica School, which can be found among GoWYLD’s Student Research Resources.

For adults who would like a review, Mometrix, one of GoWYLD’s e-learning resources, has short videos explaining how to use pi to solve problems. (Several pi-related videos can be found by typing “circle” in the search bar.)

You can also visit the Pi Day website for even more ideas on how to celebrate this deliciously fun and mathematical day.

The Wyoming State Library hopes you have a very happy Pi Day enjoying math (and maybe some pie on the side!)
