Happy International Picture Book Day!

Apr 2, 2025

What was the title of the book you begged your grown-ups to read to you over and over as a kid? Which book turned you into a reader? Has a book changed the way you viewed the world or opened up the door to new possibilities for you?

Books impact both children and adults in such profound ways and reading is such an important part of learning. International Children’s Picture Book Day, celebrated annually on April 2, commemorates how important children’s literature truly is to the world as a whole.

The first picture book, “Orbis Sensualium Pictus”, or “Visible World in Pictures” is thought to have been published in 1658 by Johann Amos Comenius, according to the U.S. Library of Congress. Read more about this pivotal historical artifact here.

Millions of new children’s picture book titles are released each year. Many of these captivating books are available in either print or electronic formats at your local Wyoming library, or online on GoWYLD Kids. Two of the resources on GoWYLD Kids, Tumblebook Library and Bookflix, allow readers to view animated versions of children’s books on any device, while Libby gives readers access to a vast collection of eBooks available to borrow with a library card.

Celebrate International Children’s Picture Book Day today by sharing a children’s book in any form with a special child or children in your life and share the wonder of reading!
