Help Kids Become Money Smart With GoWYLD

Apr 13, 2023

Child lying on grass with money and piggy bankMoney Smart Week 2023 will be held April 15-21. In honor of this, check out GoWYLD for sources that help kids learn about money. Two very different resources, BookFlix and Middle School (Gale In Context), can be found alphabetically or under the Kids K-8 subject area. The subject page also includes links to tutorials for both.

BookFlix

Bookflix is a literacy resource for grades PreK-3 that pairs classic fictional video storybooks with related eBooks. Once in, you are presented with nine categories of pairs (and a talking parrot!). There are three pairs that have to do with money. Two of them can be found under ABC’s and 123’s and the other under Celebrations. You can also search the topic of money by clicking on the Resources and Tools icon in the top right (stack of books with an apple). Notice that each pair includes a lesson plan and one of the pairs, Sam and the Lucky Money/Chinese New Year, includes a Spanish language version.

Middle School (Gale In Context)

The second GoWYLD resource to explore is Middle School (Gale In Context). Type money into the search box and select Money & Banking or go to Browse Topics. The In Context topic page includes an overview article under Read More. On the topic page, you can toggle between two Lexile levels: 980L and 820L. The overview includes Fast Facts or Main Ideas along with Words to Know. Back on the results page, there are also links to magazine and news articles, audio from National Public Radio, and reference items.

GoWYLD also includes Elementary (Gale In Context) and High School (Gale In Context).
