6 cent postage stamp with drawing of three men in boat going down river rapids

U.S. postage stamp issued in 1969 commemorating John Wesley Powell.

Summer is upon us and June is Great Outdoors Month. This puts us in mind of John Wesley Powell and his explorations of the West. Powell explored the Green and Colorado Rivers (running the Grand Canyon in wooden oar boats), as well as other scientific trips to the Rocky Mountain area.

He was involved in early iterations of the U.S. Geological Survey and then with the Bureau of Ethnology under the Smithsonian Institute.
