The Wyoming State Library is seeking an experienced individual to serve as Bibliographic Services Librarian for the WYLD Network office in Cheyenne, WY.
The WYLD Network is a statewide, multi-type library consortium of more than 100 member libraries. The WYLD Office at the State Library supports multiple software solutions for libraries using the SirsiDynix Symphony library system, including integrations with additional vendors for the Aspen Discovery online catalog, MessageBee patron notification services, as well as other third-party products to support library operations.
The Bibliographic Services Librarian serves as an expert resource for cataloging and technical services-related issues for library staff throughout the state. This professional position oversees the quality of the statewide consortium’s shared bibliographic database by monitoring data entry, resolving issues with cataloging and serials records, creating original records, creating and maintaining related documentation and training materials, and by managing the creation and use of authorized headings. This position is also responsible for assisting library staff throughout the state with issues related to the cataloging, serials, and acquisitions modules in the integrated library system. The bibliographic services librarian identifies training needs, designs and implements training curriculum, and creates related support materials. The incumbent proactively researches and recommends technical solutions related to the quality and integrity of the bibliographic database and manages projects related to data loads, synchronization with third-party systems, and cleanup.
Some essential functions of this position include managing the statewide, shared bibliographic database, providing leadership in addressing quality issues, member contribution of records, data entry training, and policy development, creating original bibliographic records, monitoring data in OCLC’s international database to ensure local holdings accuracy, planning, designing, and delivering training to the staff of WYLD Network libraries in cataloging policies and procedures, serials maintenance, acquisitions, and bibliographic record creation responding to help desk inquiries and concerns about system functionality in the areas of acquisitions, cataloging, and serials, investigating and resolves issues with displays and search results in WYLDcat (public catalog/discovery layer). Designing and engaging in testing and providing feedback to the discovery services vendor regarding development work related to bibliographic and item data, creating and maintains authority records in accordance with Library of Congress standards to provide a standardized vocabulary necessary for efficient and successful information retrieval by library users, and coordinating with the WYLD Network Cataloging Committee to define parameters and procedures for bibliographic database maintenance and ensure compliance with international, national and local standards.
- Preference will be given to applicants with a Master of Library Science (MLS), Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS), or an equivalent degree and to applicants with two years of experience supporting an integrated library system, preferably SirsiDynix Symphony and related library software and hardware. The successful applicant must have a valid driver’s license.
The optimal candidate will have knowledge of library technology standards and protocols such as MARC format, RDA, FRBR; library science principles and practices, library classification, cataloging rules and practices, including bibliographic record formats, authority control, use of international bibliographic utilities and other electronic and traditional resources used by catalogers, and bibliographic database indexing and management, as well as demonstrate effective communication, interpersonal, organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills with an ability to work with a widely diverse group of people and the ability to work with people with varying levels of computer skills and the ability to make technology understandable to the library community.
