WLA “What the Tech” 2024 Review

The “What the Tech” lightning round tour of technology at the 2024 Wyoming Library Association Annual Conference was a great success! Topics at the session included everything from health literacy applications to free 3D printing resources, and several examples of AI.

Here are the slides for those who couldn’t make it and for those who were there and would like to review them. Also, here are the links and summaries so you can check out these tools yourself:

 

Literature Map: Check out this AI discovery tool that maps literature, movies, and music to find and present content based on their similarities. Literature Map is part of Gnod, the Global Network of Discovery.

Transkribus: Unlock the past with Transkribus! This website uses AI text recognition to recognize, edit, collaborate on, and interpret written texts. One example shared was that Transkribus has been very helpful when trying to decode genealogical resources from one user’s own history!

PBS Eons: Explore the greatest mysteries of natural history with the PBS Eons website, YouTube channel, and podcast.

Lazy Genius Podcast: The Lazy Genius podcast gives listeners advice and tricks on resolving issues such as time management and calendar logistics, dealing with overwhelm, strengthening friendships, and more.

Gapminder: Gapminder is an independent educational non-profit fighting global misconceptions with quizzes, surveys, and investigative analysis.

Yuka App: The Yuka app is an independent project that deciphers product labels and analyzes the health impact of food products and cosmetics from the convenience of your mobile device.

PATHS-Public Access Telehealth Spaces in Libraries: The Public Access Telehealth Spaces (PATHS) Initiative promotes access to safe, secure, and accessible spaces to connect all community members to equitable health and wellness resources and services. In its pilot phase, PATHS has been installed in three Wyoming libraries—Goshen, Natrona, and Park counties.

I Am Affirmations App: This app is self-care in the palm of your hand! Build connections, confidence, and support your mental health journey with the I Am app that provides thousands of affirmations in its beautifully designed and easy-to-use interface.

3D Printing File Resources (Smithsonian 3D Digitization, NASA 3D Printable Models, National Institute of Health): Learn about technology and history with free 3D printing files from the Smithsonian, NASA, and the NIH!

Trello: Ease your mind with task management by Trello. Create digital workspaces to organize your thoughts/tasks by project, by day, etc. Use Trello for work, chores at home, school, and even meal planning.

Tonie Boxies: Tonie Boxes are screen-free entertainment for children ages Pre-K to 8 years old. They’re easy to use and loved by librarians, young patrons, and parents at the Washakie County Library!

Free Mobile Apps for Health Information from NNLM (PubMed4Hh, Dr. Allevable’s Lab, HerbList): Build health literacy in your community with these free mobile apps! PubMed for Handhelds is an app from the National Library of Medicine specifically for Android devices that provides a way to search PubMed and free journals. De. Allevable’s Lab is a game designed for 5th-9th grade students to learn about regenerative medicine. HerbList is an herb directory provided by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health that provides users with details on herbs used in medicine.

Tasty App: The Tasty app is a catalog of recipes, tips and tricks, and grocery list helper for your kitchen. Search recipes by occasion, ingredient, diet, meal type, and more.

AI Song Creator: Make a song about anything—even libraries! The free version of this AI resource allows you to generate a few songs (music AND lyrics) each day.
